Apple has announced a new feature for iOS 14 called “Nearby Interaction” which locate and interact with nearby devices using distance and direction. Enable an iPhone to measure the relative position of other iPhones.

The Nearby Interaction framework streams distance and direction between Apple devices containing the U1 chip. (Introduced last year, the U1 chip in iPhone 11 models enables Ultra Wideband support for improved spatial awareness, but Apple has so far only used the technology to power a directional AirDrop feature in iOS 13.) Discover how this powerful combination of hardware and software allow you to create intuitive spatial interactions based on the relative position of two or more devices.

Spatial awareness, in essence, means understanding the physical world around you. Such understanding in a device you’re holding in your hand can translate into fluid interactions with the environment.
